British Columbia now has 10 cases of the Omicron variant

British Columbia health officials say 10 cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have now been identified in the province.

The Department of Health said in a press release on Friday that the worrying variant was found in the Vancouver Coastal, Fraser and Island Health areas.

It says the province has 437 new cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths.

Of the 2,994 active cases of COVID-19, the ministry indicates that 211 of those infected are hospitalized and 72 in intensive care.

It indicates that 86% of those five and over received the first injection of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 82.2% of them received their second dose.

Authorities say 13% of people 12 and older received their booster injection.

COVID-19 resurgence predictions for Canada, worse if Omicron replaces Delta: Tam

Canada is expected to experience a resurgence of COVID-19 and this could accelerate even more if the Omicron variant replaces Delta, Director of Public Health Dr. Theresa Tam said on Friday.

New federal modeling shows that if we assume that Omicron is three times more transmissible than Delta and becomes the dominant strain, then the number of daily cases in Canada could explode from around 3,300 currently to 26,600 by mid-January.

If Delta remains dominant, the number of cases on that date could be as low as 2,900, if transmission is reduced by 15%, or as high as 15,000, if transmission increases by 15%. If transmission remains the same, Canada could see 7,000 cases per day.

The modeling did not include projections for hospitalizations or deaths if Omicron became dominant. Tam said there was more to learn about the severity of the variant, but she urged caution during the upcoming holiday season.

“I said the winter season was going to be a bumpy road to a brighter spring. So that’s another bump in the road and we still don’t know enough about the Omicron variant except that it seems very transferable, ”she said at a press conference on Friday.

Waterloo Region Investigates Likely Omicron Outbreaks Linked To Hockey Tournaments

Two COVID-19 outbreaks linked to hockey tournaments in Ontario were under investigation as likely Omicron variant clusters, with the province reporting more than 1,600 new infections on Saturday.

Waterloo Region Public Health said it was “very likely” that the 31 cases associated with two tournaments held elsewhere in the province were the result of the Omicron variant.

Hockey players and their contacts have been urged to self-isolate and get tested, as the area’s top doctor has warned all residents should reduce their social contact in light of the “increased risk.”

“It is highly likely that the new Omicron variant is already present in the Waterloo region, and we expect it to spread quickly,” Dr Hsiu-Li Wang said in a written statement.

Public health in the region said 11 cases of COVID-19 were linked to a hockey tournament held in London, Ont., And another 20 cases were linked to a separate tournament in Markham, Ont.
