408 new cases of COVID-19, 9 deaths reported Tuesday in Mississippi

JACKSON, Mississippi (WLOX) – The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 408 new cases of COVID-19 and nine new deaths in the state on Tuesday. The number of new cases is the total reported from 3 p.m. Sunday to 3 p.m. Monday.

In the lower six counties, 44 new cases were reported in the following counties: Pearl River County (23), Harrison County (12), Jackson County (6), George County (2), Hancock County ( 1) and Stone County (0). A new death that occurred between November 7 and December 9 has been identified through a death certificate report in Harrison County.

As of December 13 at 3 p.m., there had been a total of 520,259 cases and 10,340 deaths reported in Mississippi.

As of December 13, 235 people were hospitalized in Mississippi with confirmed infections. Of these, 63 were in intensive care and 30 on a ventilator. The majority of people hospitalized are not vaccinated, according to the MSDH.

Cases among adults aged 25 to 39 are highest, warns the MSDH. However, the majority of people who have died from COVID-19 are over 65.

COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are available to Mississippians free of charge at MSDH sites across the state, as well as at local pharmacies and health care providers. In total, the Mississippi Department of Health reports that 47% state residents are fully vaccinated by November 24. To view the most recent MSDH vaccination report, Click here.

In order to determine the presumed number of people who have recovered from the virus, state health officials say the patient must meet one of two criteria. For patients who have NOT been hospitalized, they are considered cured if they have not tested positive for the virus after 14 days. For patients who have been hospitalized or whose hospitalization was unknown, they are presumed to be cured if they have tested positive for 21 days or more.
