1st case of omicron variant confirmed in Johnson County

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, along with the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, confirmed the first case of the omicron variant of COVID-19 on Wednesday in the county.

“The JCDHE is working to investigate the case (a man under the age of 30) and to identify and contact those who may have been in contact with the confirmed case,” JCDHE said in a statement.

In response to the presence of omicron variants in the county, the JCDHE again stressed the importance of vaccination.

“The best way to prevent serious illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated,” said Dr Sanmi Areola, director of JCDHE. “Get your first, second or booster dose as soon as possible to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The department also suggested using a “layered” approach to prevent the disease – getting the vaccine, wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, washing your hands often, and staying home if symptoms appear.
