Alpha variant of coronavirus learned to evade innate immune system: Research, Science News

Upon mutation, the Alpha variant may have acquired “skills” to successfully block the “innate immune system response”, new research has revealed.

Published in Nature magazine, the research claims that the Alpha variant has learned to successfully evade the human body’s initial response line. This variant blocks the airway sensors, thereby stopping the process where these sensors “alert” the immune system to the presence of a virus in the body.

Since the variant has learned to block the functioning of the sensors, the body is unable to produce an antiviral protein interferon.

“We found that the Alpha variant of SARS-CoV-2 adapted to avoid eliciting our first-line defensive innate immune response much better than the viruses of the first wave. We found that it does so by manufacturing more viral proteins that can turn off the innate immune system. These proteins are called N, Orf6 and Orf9b and are known as innate immune antagonists, ”explained co-first author Dr Lucy Thorne (UCL Division of Infection & Immunity ).

“By mutating to escape our innate immune system, the Alpha variant can replicate under the radar in the early stages of infection, which we believe dramatically increases its chances of infecting a person when they land in the nose, throat or lungs. For a virus it is a resounding success, which allows it to spread more effectively from person to person. “

The researchers believe the finding provides insight into the course of the deadly SARS-CoV-2 and may also help put in place a plan to identify other “variants of concern.”

“It will be fascinating to see how the other variants, such as Delta and Omicron, behave comparatively in our pulmonary epithelial systems,” Thorne said.
