The COVID-19 pandemic could end in 2022 if global immunization increases, according to the head of the World Health Organization.
WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said in a statement on Friday that the world had all the tools and resources to end what he called a “calamity”.
Tedros added that “if the right choices are made, we can reverse this pandemic. “
Among other 2021 achievements, the WHO said 8.5 billion COVID-19 vaccines have been administered worldwide, although leaders say inequalities have “fueled” the pandemic.
According to the WHO, projections show that it is possible to immunize all adults in the world and to provide boosters to high-risk groups.
The New York Times reports, with more than 580,000 reported cases, the United States on Thursday broke its own record for new daily coronavirus cases – beating a milestone already crossed the day before.
Thursday’s tally overturned 488,000 new cases on Wednesday, nearly double the highest number from last winter.
In North Carolina, the state Department of Health and Human Services reported 18,571 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday – the highest ever.
