Today’s Ottawa Update
There are currently 35 Ottawa residents in local hospitals for treatment of active COVID-19, according to Ottawa Public Health (OPH), three more than in Wednesday’s update
Three people with COVID-19 are in an intensive care unit, one less than the last update. These patients are between 40 and 80 years old.
These hospital figures do not include people who came to the hospital for other reasons who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 or patient transfers from other health units.
Coronavirus Levels in Ottawa’s Wastewater, which is not based on tests, rose again on Tuesday after a few days of stability.
The number of cases has reached record highs in many places this winter – and as the Omicron variant spreads overwhelms and limits testing, the actual number of cases in Ottawa could be three to ten times higher, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches said on Tuesday.
On Thursday, SPO reported 1,231 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the death of a woman in her twenties who had COVID.
Among those tested, more than 35% are positive. This number has generally been increasing since the end of November.
The seven-day moving average of new confirmed COVID-19 cases expressed per 100,000 population is above 650 despite these testing limits.
Ninety percent of Ottawa’s eligible population has at least one dose of the vaccine, 83 percent has at least two, and 35 percent has three – although eligibility for the third dose is extremely limited for children under 18. The next SPO vaccine update will be on Friday.
Throughout the region
The wider region has 153 hospitalizations related to COVID-19 and 26 intensive care patients as of noon ET. There are over 24,000 known active cases, even with testing limitations.
Renfrew County reported its fifth death from COVID in eight days after reporting just 11 during the remainder of the pandemic.
Hastings Prince Edward has reported three more COVID-19 patients at local hospitals, for a total of 19. This includes three in intensive care. Two other residents with COVID-19 in that area have died.
The Kingston area has 18 COVID hospitalizations and nine intensive care patients. His wastewater levels were high when it was last updated on December 30.
Leeds, Grenville and Lanark counties are reporting 13 local COVID hospitalizations, including four in intensive care. These are each less than Wednesday.
