CS Mott Children’s Hospital Warns Rising COVID Cases in Children Threaten to Impact Care

ANN ARBOR, me. – The number of pediatric cases of COVID is what separates the omicron wave from other waves of the virus.

On Tuesday, Michigan Medicine and CS Mott Children’s Hospital sounded the alarm bells about their situation and the impact it has on their ability to care for children.

There are a few fairly simple reasons why omicron is hitting kids more right now. Widespread face-to-face learning means more contact between children who can spread it. The dramatic increase in transmissibility means that any weak point in protection will lead to infection.

The current number of COVID pediatric hospitalizations has more than doubled since the outbreak began in December. Michigan has some of the highest numbers we’ve ever seen in children and the trend is national.

Dr Erika Newman is a pediatric surgeon at CS Mott Children’s Hospital.

“We are deeply concerned about children in our state and in our community and our ability to care for children with COVID and non-COVID. We have never seen so many children hospitalized with COVID-19, ”Newman said.

If you have children of age to get vaccinated, health authorities recommend getting them vaccinated. The ripple effect that pediatric COVID admissions have on the care of non-COVID patients is profound.

Major surgeries are delayed and specialist care available only at CS Mott Children’s Hospital is denied because it is too full.

Since the beginning of December, they have canceled or postponed at least 250 surgeries.
