Today’s Ottawa Update
There are 84 Ottawa residents in local hospitals for treatment of active COVID-19, according to Thursday’s update from Ottawa Public Health (OPH). That’s one more than was reported on Wednesday.
Eight of those patients are in an intensive care unit, up from 10 reported Wednesday. This number has generally been stable for about a week.
These hospital numbers do not include people who came to the hospital for other reasons and later tested positive for COVID-19. They also do not cover people with persistent COVID-19 problems or patients transferred from other health units.
Hospitals are challenged on a different level by the increased spread because staff shortages reduce their capacity. There are also 35 hospital outbreaks reported by OPH, which stabilized this week.

The number of cases has reached record highs in many places this winter – and as the Omicron variant spreads overwhelms and limits testingthe actual number of cases in Ottawa is several times higher.
On Thursday, OPH reported another 332 cases of COVID-19 and the deaths of two people in their 60s with COVID.
The seven-day rolling average of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases expressed per 100,000 population is around 240, but limited testing capacity makes this measure less reliable.
Of recent COVID-19 tests taken outside of long-term care homes, about 20% were positive.
Ninety-one percent of Ottawans aged five and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 84% have received at least two and 57% at least three.
SPO is expected to provide its next testing and vaccine update on Friday.
In the whole region
The wider region has about 300 hospitalizations for COVID-19, including 34 requiring intensive care. These figures are relatively stable and do not include Hastings Prince Edward Public Health, which instituted another way of accounting.
Quebec reported two additional deaths linked to COVID-19 in the Outaouais on Thursday and 125 hospitalizations, 10 less than Wednesday.
