COVID is still top of the list but the flu is on the rise

COVID still tops the list of health concerns, but this week doctors are seeing other diseases spread, especially among children.

Children tend to be very good at sharing germs, and a number of illnesses are on the rise among school-aged children and those in day care.

Many symptoms are also COVID symptoms, which means children should get tested to make sure COVID is not to blame.

Wayne County

Ascension St. John is seeing COVID cases and COVID complications, but maybe it’s past the peak.

They see COVID causing croup or bronchiolitis in some patients and some children infected with COVID and the flu at the same time. Stomach viruses also make the list.

Oakland County

Dr. Rena Daiza of Henry Ford Bloomfield Township reports cases of COVID, flu, mono and lots of strep throat in children.

Ascension Providence and Clarkston Medical Group are also seeing COVID, flu and strep throat.

CVS Minute Clinics say that in addition to COVID across the board, they are seeing rashes and pink eyes.

Washtenaw County

Looking at Washtenaw County, Michigan Medicine still sees many COVID cases, but fewer who are seriously ill.

The health department says sporadic cases of the flu continue to appear and respiratory illnesses are on the rise among school-aged children and those in day care.

Monroe County

Promedica Monroe ER doctors are reporting COVID, flu and respiratory issues.

Promedica Monroe Family Medicine also treats RSV, colds, and sinus problems.

Macomb County

McLaren Macomb ER doctor Ben Doerr said COVID volumes remain extremely high, but fortunately very few patients are showing severe symptoms.

A hidden health issue is also reported. CVS Minute Clinics has seen an increase in high blood pressure in patients who are seen for another condition.

It’s a pattern that providers have seen in many adults during the pandemic. Even small increases in blood pressure can increase the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular problems.

If your blood pressure hasn’t been checked recently, it’s a good idea to do so.
