For a long time, scientists wondered if the Covid-19 vaccine caused changes in women’s menstrual patterns. Although there is data to support this claim, not enough research has been done to make it a scientifically proven fact.
Now researchers from Imperial College London have claimed that there are some changes in the periods of women who have been vaccinated against Covid-19, but these changes end very quickly. According to the researchers, even if the periods are affected by the vaccine, it normalizes very quickly.
According to the British Medical Journal, Dr Victoria Male cites two studies found in an American menstrual tracking app, showing that almost 4,000 women had a short-term delay before having their next period. However, they were only delayed for a period, and after that everything became normal. This means that the effects of the vaccine were temporary.
The women, who took both doses of the vaccine, had their periods delayed by two days. One study found that one in 10 women who took the vaccine got their period after an 8-day gap from normal, but after two periods it all came back.
Another study, carried out in Norway, had more than 5,600 participants. Changes in the periods of 40% of these women were observed even before taking the vaccine. However, many of these women admitted to bleeding more than before after taking the vaccine.
But in them too, the periods again regularized a second time with bleeding becoming normal again.
Dr. Victoria Male also said vaccines do not affect women’s fertility, as some studies claim. However, Dr Male said sperm count and quality can be affected in men after covid-19 infection, although more studies are needed in this regard.
