Scientists have identified a common genetic mutation that appears to raise the risk of Alzheimer’s by 50 per cent.
Experts analyzed the brain scans of 18,330 people in Britain, with an average age of 63, comparing this with their genetic profile and GP records.
They found that one in four adults carried a mutation that interferes with the production of a previously unknown tiny chemical or microprotein.
High levels of the mutated version of this microprotein, called Shmoose, were linked to rogue tau proteins that build up in the brain and cause plaques, which lead to Alzheimer’s.
Analysis suggests that people with the mutant variant were between 20 and 50 per cent more likely to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
