As diabetes progresses, heart health deteriorates and one becomes susceptible to sudden cardiac events. High blood sugar over time can damage blood vessels and nerves in the heart. Diabetics also have other complications that often accompany the disease such as high blood pressure which can further affect heart function. So, if you have diabetes and your blood sugar remains uncontrolled most of the time, your heart is likely to be affected and it is important that you make appropriate lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy diet, staying active, and reducing stress levels can help people with diabetes not only maintain healthy blood sugar levels, but also achieve optimal heart health.
