Dog Owners Face Rise in Canine Flu Cases

(WFSB) – Dog owners across the country are dealing with an increase in canine flu cases.

It’s similar to what humans get.

There are many similarities in the symptoms, reactions, and care of dogs that contract this virus.

It’s actually two viruses. They look very similar and while other states are seeing a high rate of increase in cases, Connecticut and New England are not.

But that doesn’t mean dog owners shouldn’t be vigilant when it comes to caring for their pets.

“Common signs of canine flu are cough, lethargy runny nose, fever,” said Dr. Heidi Morey, owner of Fenton River Veterinary Hospital. “Every dog ​​is a little different, many dogs will not show any signs. Some will only have minor respiratory symptoms.

We are not yet reaching danger levels, but many dog ​​lovers were not even aware of the existence of the virus.

“I had no idea, when you said that my first instinct was to leave the dog park. But I’m glad to have this information and what to watch out for,” said Wethersfield’s Pat Bengtson .

“Good to know, I think I’ll keep bringing him here. I think I’m going to keep bringing her back to the park, we also walk on our own a lot,” said Kelly Martin of Rocky Hill.

Dr. Morey said the canine flu vaccine is not for all dogs, but for dogs that are compromised or more suspicious of the virus, the vaccine is a good idea.

“Younger or older dogs are more susceptible. If they have a weakened immune system, that can also make it worse,” Morey said.

Morey said those dogs ages 7 and older are the dogs for whom the vaccine might be the best option to avoid the flu.
