LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3: Recent vaccination and boosters reduce infectiousness, but risk of infection remains high, according to a study in California prisons.

According to the study, the researchers analyzed anonymized data collected by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), in the United States. The data included COVID-19 test results, vaccination status and whereabouts of 111,687 residents, 97% of whom were male, between December 15, 2021 and May 20, 2022.
The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Medicine.
Breakthrough infections were common, despite the relatively high resident vaccination rate of 81% with the primary vaccine series. But the rate of serious illnesses was low. In just over five months, there have been 22,334 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infections, 31 hospitalizations and no deaths from COVID-19, according to the study.
Vaccinated residents with breakthrough infections were significantly less likely to transmit them: 28% versus 36% for those who were not vaccinated. But the likelihood of transmission increased by 6% for every five weeks since a person’s last vaccine, the study found.
Natural immunity from previous infection also had a protective effect, and the risk of virus transmission was 23% for someone with reinfection compared to 33% for someone who had never been infected, according to the study.
Those with hybrid immunity, both to infection and vaccination, were 40% less likely to transmit the virus. Half of this protection comes from the immunity one gains by fighting an infection and the other half comes from vaccination, according to the study.
The researchers said they were pleased to see that the vaccination gave extra protection even to those who had already been infected, but they were surprised at how the infection continued to spread, despite the relatively high vaccination rates of the residents.
“Regardless of the benefits you see in vaccination and prior infection, there is still a large amount of transmission in this study,” said Sophia Tan, the study’s first author. “We hope these findings can support ongoing efforts to protect this vulnerable population,” Tan said.
This includes efforts to keep residents informed of reminders and increase vaccination rates for prison staff, only 73% of whom had received the primary series at the time of the study, according to the study.
The overall recall rate could also be significantly improved. At the time of the study, only 59% of residents and 41% of staff had received all doses recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based on their age and medical condition. , according to the study.
“Within two months of vaccination, people are least infectious, indicating that boosters and large timed vaccination campaigns may play a role in reducing transmission during flare-ups,” Lo said.
