And while alternative medications may be an option, they may come with new hurdles, including insurance coverage and closer monitoring in case it doesn’t work as well.

Adding yet another layer to the management of an already complicated and costly chronic disease, the Ozempic drought is most rampant in Australia, where the viral sensation that has become a scarce resource will only be available at less March.

Australian authorities have called on healthcare professionals to stop initiating new prescriptions for Ozempic and to contact diabetic patients affected by the shortage to switch them to alternative treatments. They also issued warnings to influencers promoting it online.
