UV lamps used for gel manicures linked to skin cancer risks

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama. (WBRC)-A recent national study linking carcinogenic DNA damage to gel manicures is catching the eye of those who regularly do their nails.

UV lamps used to cure varnish have been shown to be associated with DNA damage and cancer-causing mutations.

Dr. Lauren Kole, who is an assistant professor of dermatology, said different case studies showed similar results. She said patients heavily exposed to these UV rays were at increased risk or had multiple skin cancers on the hands or around the fingernails.

To reduce the risk, she recommends wearing a high SPF sunscreen on your hands at the salon or cutting off the fingertips of specialty gloves.

“If you always leave your nails exposed, you don’t completely eliminate the risk, but you may still feel more comfortable continuing to have manicures,” Dr. Kole said.

If you’re worried about being at risk for skin cancer, Dr. Kole recommends scheduling a full-body exam with a dermatologist.
