Mr Editor
Very useful article with practical suggestions.
The feeling of guilt can be driven by our rational brain, but more often than not, I suggest by our emotional brain, and self-compassion is needed.
Our identity is based on our capacity as a doctor to be the helper or the healer and not the reverse. Our culture is compassionate towards patients, but much less so towards peers.
Of course, it makes no sense, but our ancestors had to be strong, well, capable at all times and so the legacy remains.
It may help some of us, when sick, to remember that it is not uncommon for sick doctors to harm patients. So taking necessary sick leave is not at all selfish.
If one returns to work earlier than necessary, there is also a risk of long-term resentment, which is counterproductive for oneself and for others.
Compassionate teams at work facilitate a successful return to effective work, which benefits everyone.
Thank you for raising the issue so well.
