Do gel manicure clients need to take any precautions?

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — Here at La Belle Nail Lounge, customers wanting a gel manicure wear gloves. This is because the process involves UV lamps to help harden the polish.

The process means the manicure lasts longer than a conventional manicure.

“What I like about gel is that it lasts a lot longer. I usually do my nails once a month,” says Ashley Vazeen DNP, who is a fan of gel manicures.

However, Vazeen says that in her field, she knows that ultraviolet light can cause age spots on her hands.

A recent study published in “Nature” shows that mice exposed to UV light develop certain skin cell mutations.

“They need to do bigger studies to see if it’s true in humans,” says Cindy Lamerson MD, of the Nevada Center for Dermatology. “They did, but they are very small. And you need really big numbers to figure out if there’s a problem.

Dr. Lamerson says it will take years to determine the true impact of UV light on the hands.

She wholeheartedly supports the use of gloves like those used at La Belle Nail Lounge. She says customers can always bring their own fingerless gloves for a gel manicure. Or she says to put sunscreen on your hands before putting them under the light. Make sure it has a high SPF.

No need to give up your nail indulgence, just have your fingers on the pulse regarding the latest developments in gel manicure.
