This position directs the publication and administration of the print and online editions of the CHA journal, Catholic Health World (CHW). The publisher operationalizes an editorial philosophy that promotes Catholic health care as a ministry of the Catholic Church through ACH member-centric coverage and content that informs members of the ACH and other subscribers about the association’s projects and advocacy efforts. The publisher finds story ideas that appeal to and inform a specialized audience of health and Ministry of Health executives. The editor is a skilled writer and journalist who supports writers during story development on content clarity, flow, and editorial point of view. The editor line edits stories; tell stories; works as a photo editor; oversees the work of a graphic designer and two reporters/editors and does freelance writing and photography. The Editor establishes the editorial calendar and production schedules, oversees pre-print work, ensures that production deadlines are met, and oversees or intervenes in all aspects of the quality of print and web editions. Additional responsibilities include integrating the ACH’s mission, goals, strategies and policies into ASC content and contributing to other association projects as needed. Travel may be requested.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of the Department and other association leaders to use CHA communications to foster goodwill and positive public perception of CHA members
  • Daily management of CHW personnel
  • Identify and assign stories for 20 CHW issues each year
  • Work with the Web Editor and Web Team to expand the reach of CHW content via social media and create goodwill and good press for ACH members
  • Collaborate with all ACH departments to identify story ideas and promote programs and products
  • Manage editorial and planning processes for CHW; Meet deadlines
  • Shape content for niche audiences through assignments, coaching to help writers define story architecture, and editing for logic, clarity, and flow. Make the copy appealing
  • Identify and hire freelance writers and photographers
  • Manage CHW pre-print production, including layout, identifying by story position the most interesting and important content
  • Identify issues that interest the readership and find ways to break those issues down into relatable, digestible, and even actionable pieces
  • Copy Edit and Approve CHW Proofs
  • Plan and oversee annual meeting coverage, including on-site coverage
  • Work with the finance department to develop a realistic production budget
  • Obtain offers for CHW printing and other contracts as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5+ years in editing or publishing newspapers, newsletters or other fast repeating publications. Knowledge of health care, health policy, Catholic or non-profit health care. Knowledge of Catholic education, Catholic health ministry and/or healthcare industry desired. Supervisory experience of 3 years or more desired.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: High level of creativity with good judgment on news relevant to church ministry. Demonstrated ability to make sound editorial decisions. Proven ability in report writing and writing. Professional and diplomatic behavior. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Superior organizational skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to build internal and external relationships and networks. Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to coach, direct staff to achieve goals, coach and influence others to action. Strong sense of teamwork. Demonstrates flexibility and pride in owning work product. Experience working under pressure, meeting deadlines and managing multiple tasks with competing priorities. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook. Basic skills in Microsoft Excel.

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in English, communications, journalism or related field.
