Raez reports the benefits of liquid biopsy in newly diagnosed NSCLC

In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Luis E. Raez, MD, FACP, FCCP, about the key similarities and differences between liquid and tissue biopsy and the potential benefits of liquid biopsy in determining first-line therapies for non-small metastatic patients. cellular lung cancer (NSCLC).

Dr. Raez is scientific director, medical director, and head of the thoracic oncology program at Memorial Cancer Institute, part of the Memorial Healthcare System, in Pembroke Pines, Florida. He is also Clinical Professor of Medicine at Florida International University in Miami, Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru.

In a retrospective analysis published in Clinical lung cancer in November 2022, of 170 patients with newly diagnosed NSCLC who received both liquid and tissue biopsy, Raez and colleagues demonstrated that physicians based 73.5% of their first-line NSCLC treatment decisions on liquid biopsy results and 25.9% of their treatment decisions on tissue biopsy results. Additionally, this study found that liquid biopsy next-generation sequencing (NGS) was between 94.8% and 100% concordant with NGS tissue biopsy in identifying guideline-recommended biomarkers.

In our exclusive interview, Dr. Raez discussed the results of this study, the benefits of liquid biopsy’s relatively short turnaround time, and the financial barriers to performing multiple NGS tests per patient.
