Experts warn Bay Area residents to prepare for arrival of deadly mosquitoes and viruses as hot weather approaches

CONTRA COSTA CO., Calif. (KGO) — On the heels of all the wet weather, a mosquito outbreak could be imminent for many Bay Area neighborhoods.

Tiny tadpole-like swimmers are mosquito larvae. You’ll likely find them in planters, children’s toys, garden fountains, and rain-filled birdbaths. Vector control districts are asking for the public’s help this year, starting now.

“We have technicians here in the district going out and inspecting all public water sources, creeks, marshes and marinas in Contra Costa County for mosquitoes,” said Andrew Pierce of the Control District. mosquitoes and vectors from Contra Costa.

But it’s up to individuals to patrol their own neighborhoods.

“Empty any containers that may have standing water. There could be potential mosquito eggs in those containers, so throw it out and scrub,” Pierce said.

Not only does the West Nile virus cause concern every year, but last August the Aedes aegypti mosquito, carrier of Zika and dengue fever, was discovered in Martinez. Patrols will therefore be on the lookout before sending trucks to spray the neighborhoods.

As for those who have ponds or standing water on their property, Pierce said, “The District provides mosquito-eating fish. Residents can call or visit our website to request these fish. A technician will then come and will do an inspection to make sure the area is suitable for fish and then we will provide fish to the resident.

As the weather gets warmer, mosquitoes will emerge. Residents are reminded that even a little water can lead to lots of mosquitoes.
