Director of Healthy Homes Programs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for Women for a Healthy Environment

Women for a Healthy Environment (WHE) is seeking a full-time Healthy Homes Director to join an organization dedicated to educating and empowering community members to act as environmental risk ambassadors. Through educational programs, technical assistance, coalition building and advocacy, WHE delivers programs focused on creating healthy homes, healthy schools and healthy early learning centers. The organization advocates policy solutions to better protect public health and reduce the risk of exposure to environmental toxins.

The director will oversee the Healthy Homes program staff, which includes community health workers, the HUD grants manager, and the workforce development coordinator. This position will coordinate the organization’s community outreach efforts and deliver healthy housing programs, in addition to serving on various committees and task forces. The Director will organize programs and training for staff, as well as community members and health practitioners, develop publications and conduct public awareness activities. The Director is responsible for overseeing the recruitment, engagement and motivation of large numbers of new people to take action, which will further the targeted campaign or WHE program goals. This includes WHE’s role in the Get the Lead Campaign, Out Pittsburgh and Lead Safe Allegheny Coalition. The director will build alliances with other organizations that can influence decision makers.

The successful candidate will be a socially responsible individual, passionate about the non-profit world, with a demonstrated knowledge of environmental health issues. The candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public health (MPH degree strongly preferred) and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience overseeing a program in the nonprofit field.

Main responsibilities:

• Healthy Homes program staff management;
• Managing the Healthy Homes program budget and assisting with grant applications and reporting;
• Participation in various community working groups, committees, etc. that are aligned with WHE public health guidance;
• Give presentations at the local, regional and federal levels;
• Provide Healthy Homes programs to Southwest PA community members when needed;
• Creation of WHE publications and resource materials, such as fact sheets, press releases, blogs and other written materials that effectively communicate program objectives in a concise manner;
• Develop relationships with local groups, community leaders, government officials and the media;
• Recruit community organizations and residents to participate in the activities of the organization;
• Organize community forums and events to educate and mobilize target populations, especially young adults and mothers;
• Make informative presentations on organizational priorities whenever possible;
• Keep WHE audiences regularly informed and engaged through online communication updates (website, social media, email alerts);
• Stay informed of scientific research and initiatives related to healthy homes.

• Professional level of knowledge equivalent to that normally acquired by obtaining a bachelor’s degree from a college and training in the field of public health (advanced degree in the field of public health strongly preferred).
• Minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
• Experience in mobilizing key constituents, developing leadership and building grassroots support (preferred).
• Experience in creating educational materials and PowerPoint presentations easily understood by the community.
• Experience delivering presentations and developing resource materials.
• Experience in group facilitation and coalition building (preferred).
• Extremely proficient in computers including MS Office and database applications.
• Understanding of website content management and social media.
• Strong attention to detail and proven organizational and project management skills.
• Ability to work well with diverse constituencies.
• Able to take initiative, think strategically, work cooperatively with a diverse group of people and share responsibility and credit.
• Strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and flexibility to switch between projects as needed.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills and strong writing and editing abilities.
• Ability to work occasional irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Commitment to the mission of Women for a Healthy Environment, including a strong interest and knowledge of environmental health topics and exposures.
