These days, many Americans are getting confused in antihistamine fog. Between sniffles, sneezes, and itches, those I spoke with manage to croak out a version of the same grievance: This allergy season is the worst. I have no choice but to agree. In New York, where I live, the tiny chartreuse blossoms of maples and the caterpillar-like catkins of birches and oaks are pollen bombs that seem to explode with more vigor than usual. As I write this, mascara is running off my lashes in pollen-induced tears. A colleague, addicted to sleepy decongestants, resorted to an absurd number of espressos to get through the day.
Complaints about allergies come up every spring, but the symptoms really seem to be getting worse. Blame it on climate change: Allergy seasons, says Kenneth Mendez, CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, “are getting longer and more intense” as plants produce more pollen over a longer period of time. The problem is not only that higher temperatures lengthen the growing season for plants; carbon dioxide himself promotes pollen production. Compared to three decades ago, the North American pollen season now starts about 20 days earlier, lasts about eight days longer and involves 21% more pollen, according to a study published in the journal PNAS.
But it’s not just long-time allergy sufferers like me who suffer from it. All That Pollen Seems To Trigger Seasonal Allergies In People never had before. Whether a person develops seasonal allergies depends largely on two factors: their genetics and their environment. Decades ago, scientists learned that plants prosper in a hothouse with high levels of carbon dioxide and, in the case of some species, produce more pollen that they would do it differently. This is now happening on a continental scale.
An allergy develops when a person’s immune system mistakenly flags a harmless particle as dangerous and starts making anti-allergic antibodies, known as IgE immunoglobulins, in preparation for the next encounter. When the IgE antibodies detect enough allergens, they launch an explosive attack on the unfortunate invader, releasing chemicals that cause itching, sneezing, congestion and other classic symptoms of an allergic reaction.
What complicates matters is that not all people who develop these antibodies and are thus “sensitized” to an allergen experience symptoms every time pollen flies into their nose. (Immunology is notoriously complex.) With seasonal allergies, “it takes some time or some exposure for that sensitization to cause symptoms,” May said. In other words, some people who think they don’t have allergies actually do — they just haven’t been exposed to enough pollen yet to experience symptoms. The body reacts when it “perceives there’s too much,” Mendez said.
By pumping the air full of pollen for long periods of time, climate change increases the chances that people, whether veterans or newbies, will hit that threshold. “Some of these people who might not have had symptoms otherwise will now start to get symptomatic,” May said, and “people who already have it will definitely get worse.” Some of these allergic newcomers, especially adults, could end up having lifelong seasonal symptoms. Thanks to a phenomenon called thepriming effect“, it may take less pollen to trigger symptoms in subsequent allergy seasons, which means that even the slightest amount of pollen in the air could eventually cause nasal chaos. Children sometimes “overshoot” the condition after their teenage years, May said, when adults are less likely to do so, for reasons that aren’t yet clear.
Overall, however, it’s safe to assume that more pollen means a higher chance for anyone to experience symptoms. As the planet continues to warm, the ranks of seasonal allergy sufferers will increase dramatically, although it’s unclear by exactly how much. According a study, adults in US counties where spring begins now much earlier than the historical average are 14% more likely to develop seasonal allergies than adults in counties where the onset of spring is within the normal range. In Europe, modeling studies suggest that the number of people sensitized to the common irritant ragweed will more than double, from 33 million to 77 million, by 2041 due to climate change. Worsening allergies are a global concern, but the changes will not be geographically uniform. In the United States, these changes are currently happening most rapidly in Texas and the Midwest, according to the PNAS study. William Anderegg, the study’s lead author and professor of biology at the University of Utah, told me he didn’t know why; it is possible that the plants growing there are particularly sensitive to heat. These species could eventually spread as rising temperatures give them the opportunity to migrate to new environments.
We’re just not ready for the full effects of what climate change can mean for allergies. Over time, temperatures across the country could get so high that the pollen season will last all year, as is already the case in the hottest regions of the country, noted Anderegg. The effects could be particularly severe in cities, where daytime temperatures can reach Seven warmer degrees than in neighboring countryside. Yet even though pollen fills the air, sufferers can do a lot to ease their symptoms. Given enough warning from the pollen forecast, they could stock up on medication, learn to plan for high pollen counts, and maximize the benefits of allergy medications by taking them. Before symptoms begin. Advocate for more advanced pollen monitoring – nationwide counts are often still executed by hand— could help provide more timely long-term forecasts. Yet, there is no denying that allergies are another inconvenience that climate change is introducing into our lives.
Even if America and the rest of the world make tangible progress in reducing carbon emissions, the level of warming already underway means that pollen will continue to become an even bigger nuisance, which in some cases could cause a ball of snow. Seasonal allergies are a trigger for asthma, which can lead to hospitalization, and they also make people more vulnerable to certain viruses, including The corona virus. “There’s also this huge set of societal effects that we don’t tend to think about very much,” including decline in labor productivity And poor student performance in school, says Anderegg.
