Surge in flu cases closes Detroit school

DETROIT (FOX 2) – It’s no longer peak flu season, but the disease has shut down a school in Detroit anyway.

The Marcus Garvey Academy is closed until next week as an environmental cleaning crew cleans the building.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District released a statement, which reads in part:

“This week, the school experienced an unusually high rate of flu-like symptoms, including student fevers and vomiting, especially in the lower grades. We have been actively communicating with the Detroit Health Department about these case, and we have mutually agreed that the best course of action at this time is to close the school until Monday.”

Pediatrician Kevin Dazy says an outbreak the size of a school is rare at this time of year.

“Certainly at this time of year. It’s unusual for us to see the flu. That said, you can see the flu any time of the year,” he said. “Flu season this year, hit in this time of December and January. It was very busy for us. We saw a lot of flu cases and a lot of sick children.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported two flu-related pediatric deaths this week. There have been 145 flu-related child deaths in total this season.

While the peak of the flu season is from December to February, the virus can persist until May.

“I don’t think this is necessarily surprising, but it reminds us that we should always wash our hands. Be careful when reporting any symptoms our children may have so they don’t quickly spread from child to child. the other,” Dazy said.
