Behavioral Health | Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

The Division of Adolescent Medicine’s Behavioral Health Program provides clinical services and behavioural/psychoeducational assessments. Clinicians specializing in adolescent mental health provide individual, family, collateral and group counselling, crisis intervention and case management support. Clinical areas of interest include depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, anxiety and psychosomatic disorders, eating disorders, child abuse and neglect, exposure to violence, problems and family conflict, academic failure, substance abuse and concurrent disorders, gender identity issues, and others.

Therapeutic services focus on the positive development of young people, using creative and personalized treatment in a youth-friendly environment. Activities aim to improve youth-parent relationships and support healthy families. The Division integrates evidence-based models and promising practices in treatment and has developed specialized services for young people who are unlikely to seek help from more traditional mental health services, including members gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, youth who have been involved in the addiction and/or juvenile justice system, and youth at risk of gang membership or involvement in gangs.

Services are provided through funding from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for adolescents and young adults who have Medi-Cal.

Coaching

Through the American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited psychology training program at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Behavioral Health Services trains doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows specializing in adolescent health.
