Cyclospora cases: Gastrointestinal illnesses on the rise in Harris and Fort Bend counties, health officials say

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Health officials are warning the public to take extra precautions this summer after receiving reports of an increase in Cyclospora infections in Harris and Fort Bend counties.

Health departments said they are investigating the cases and would like to remind people that some gastrointestinal illnesses can spread quickly, especially during the summer.

According to Harris County Public Health, Cyclospora is a non-fatal gastrointestinal illness caused by an intestinal parasite.

Officials say people can become infected by consuming contaminated food or water. According to Harris Health, cases in Texas have been linked to eating fresh produce, including fresh cilantro, prepackaged salad mixes, raspberries, basil, snow peas and mesclun lettuce.

Health officials say a statewide rise in infection tends to occur seasonally between April and August.

Symptoms tend to appear between two and 14 days, and most people recover without significant health effects.

However, officials warn that immunocompromised people, infants or the elderly may be more affected and potentially require hospitalization for treatment.

The public health agency stressed that the disease cannot be transmitted by direct person-to-person contact.

Here are some prevention tips:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after preparing food.
• Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating, cutting or cooking them.
• Wash all cutting boards, utensils and surfaces to avoid cross contamination.
