Taking a pause from discussing Long COVID, I want to thank my readers and the members of this community for their ideas and support over this last year. You make the hours of research and writing worth while. You are part of an important community. Thank you.
As I was reflecting that now, past the December solstice, the days are becoming longer and the light begins to return, I recalled the light in Iceland in 2017. It was near to the summer solstice, so with Iceland close to the Arctic Circle, daylight lasted for nearly 24 hours.
Not far from the Blue Lagoon, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, along with a friend, I was exploring the coastline on an Icelandic pony. Looking at the current news, the eruptions seems to be near our route and near my hotel, not far from the geothermal power plant that’s been mentioned in the news.
The coastline of the Reykjanes Peninsula was littered in places with the wrecks of ships and the skeletons maritime disasters. We saw Arctic seabirds nesting in protected pockets, here and there along our route.
It was ‘summer’, but not a warm day. The little Icelandic mare seemed to help me stay tolerably warm. She was incredibly sure footed and her gait, the tolt, made riding a pleasure that I’ll never forget.
As I think of the longer days to come, I hope that they will bring both light and health to you and your community. We’ll talk about health challenges next time.
