How to get ahead of new year stress

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – While New Year is a new start for many, it can also bring many forms of stress.

Stress can be caused by many things such as social media, work, or New Year’s resolutions that are too big. CVS Behavioral Health Senior Medical Director Shelley Doumani-Semino said most people will abandon their resolution. She also said starting off with a small goal that people can build on is one of many ways to help with stress.

“If we find that our commitments, be it meetings or social connections, social media, or events that don’t bring as much value, they take up our time and they are stressful. Learn to say no and just cut some of the things that we have been doing,” Doumani-Semino said.

Doumani-Semino also said it’s important to know when to take a step back. Stress is normal. So, learning how to manage stress goes a long way.

“This value system we have tended to acquire that we always have to be pushing ourselves. We need to learn that good is enough and that we can do the best we can,” Doumani-Semino said.

There can be a lot of big and small stressors. For some, the biggest stressors can be finances and financial burdens.

CEO of U.P. State Bank David Williams said having a budget and avoiding debt will keep people financially healthy.

“Buying this and that, they just went through a December season of Christmas buying and holiday gifts. They get their credit card bill. I am a big proponent that you pay off that credit card debt. It is the worst debt a person can have,” Williams said.

Williams also encourages people to reach out to a financial professional for extra assistance if needed.
