Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby’s impending arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Colorful Cooking with Cardiology – Butternut & Semolina Pasta 

Thursday, Feb. 8, 2 to 3 p.m.

This month, we’re celebrating Heart Month with a nourishing bowl of homemade butternut squash and semolina flour pasta by Deanna Cram, RN, MSN from our Cardiac Cath Lab. While cooking, we will talk all things food and heart — with a dish that is great for anyone since we all have a heart to care for no matter our age.

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant’s life.

Prostate Cancer Screening 

Tuesday, Feb. 13, 5:30 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute – Pelham 

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough, the five-year survival rate is 100%. 

If you meet the criteria below, you qualify for a free screening:  

  • A man 50-70 years old 
  • Have no primary care doctor 
  • Have no insurance 
  • Have not had a PSA draw in the past year 

The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven to 14 days. Registration is required for this event.Please contact Kayla at 864-560-1966 to register.

In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby’s birthday.    

 

Women and Heart Health Through the Life Cycle

Join us for a celebration of love and learning with fellow ladies. Amanda Green, MSN, AGACNP-BC, FNP-C is a nurse practitioner with over 15 years’ experience in specialized cardiology. She is here to share how cardiac health can change from birth to pregnancy to menopause and beyond. Leave a few extra minutes to enjoy a nourishing snack as well and chat with other services that women can enjoy. 

 

Baby Lounge

Spartanburg County Public Library 

Baby Lounge is a free support group for all birthing people and/or parents to join. It is a safe space to discuss topics of interest, have questions answered by healthcare professionals and to receive support for you and your family. We have an area for you to weigh your baby, should you wish, and offer an area to self-take your blood pressure. We will also provide snacks and water and engage in an informal time of discussion. We would love to have you join whether you are expecting or have delivered. We meet on the bottom floor of the Spartanburg Public Library downtown in the Inman Mills Children’s Room.  

 

Cardiac Connection at Pelham – Foods Your Heart Will Love

Nutrition and heart health go together. Join us as we learn from registered dieticians Kerri Stewart and Alexandra Lautenschlaeger on how to make some favorite dishes more healthful. We will also highlight what is to come for Cardiac Connection in 2024! 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month.

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.    

 

Prepared Breastfeeding

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries.  

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child’s age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery – Online Support Group     

Thursday, Feb. 22. noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Event   

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Caregiver Café – Music for the Heart

This is a time to learn about caregiving resources available within the health system and in the community, ask questions that are specific to your loved one’s care and build a support system of others facing some of the same challenges. 

February’s focus is music for the heart. Explore how different types of music can affect your heart rate and help you downshift from states of stress. In this workshop, you will be guided in creating a personalized playlist for relaxation.

The Heart of Cherokee County  

Monday. Feb. 26, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Heart services are continuing to expand to Cherokee Medical Center, and we want to celebrate! Join us to visit hands-on booths and get to know your Cardiac team.  

At noon, we will have a ribbon cutting for the new Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. General tours will be available throughout the event.

The Heart and Soul of Food  

Wednesday, Feb. 28, noon to 1:30 p.m. 

Many adaptations to traditional African foods made by necessity during slavery decreased their nutritional value and compromised their inherently nutritious properties. These adaptations started relatively unhealthy dietary patterns that may have helped contribute to the development of chronic diseases and decreased life spans in many African Americans.   

A chef will share the history of soul food and ways to continue honoring the African American heritage of traditional soul food dishes while preparing them with healthier ingredients. 

As an added bonus, the James Brothers will perform a mini concert from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
