HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Amid a rise in measles cases across the country, the state Department of Health has issued an alert for Hawaii residents.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeing a spike in measles cases — with 41 infections detected across 16 states as of just last week.
No outbreaks have been reported in Hawaii, but the DOH is warning physicians to be on the lookout.
A serious concern is declining vaccination rates. The CDC says just over 85% of kindergarten-aged children in Hawaii have been immunized, which is 10% less than the recommended rate.
“During the pandemic, I think we’ve seen more issues with people being more hesitant about vaccines,” said state Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Kemble.
“Now as we look at moving back into an endemic state of COVID, I think this is a great time to get caught up with all those healthcare connections.”
Children 12 months and older are advised to get two doses of the MMR vaccine and a single dose is recommended for infants 6 to 11 months.
