HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – March 14th is National Kidney Awareness Day, and healthcare professionals are reminding people to monitor their kidney health to prevent issues like kidney disease, which affects 37 million people in the United States.
One out of every three Americans are at risk for kidney disease, and there are over 100 thousand people in the U.S. waiting on a kidney transplant.
Over 660 thousand Americans are living with kidney failure. Nina Stewart, a family nurse practitioner for UVA Nephrology Group said to avoid regularly taking anti-inflammatory, over-the-counter painkillers.
”Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, they’re filtered out by the kidneys, unlike Tylenol,” said Stewart, They can be dehydrating to your kidneys and in general, can cause an increase in kidney damage.”
Stewart says to drink at least 60 ounces of fluid per day, exercise frequently and get your kidneys checked regularly.
