WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A Whatcom County adult has died from a Xylazine-related overdose, according to a press release. The drug is also known as tranq or tranq dope and the county said this is the first known death from the powerful animal tranquilizer.
In the release, Whatcom County said a toxicology report showed other drugs were present as well, including fentanyl and methamphetamines.
Xylazine is not an opioid, so naloxone sprays like Narcan or Kloxxado will not reverse an overdose, the county said. But the county also said naloxone should be used if you suspect someone is having an overdose because Xylazine is often mixed with fentanyl and the spray can reverse fentanyl overdoses.
The release said Xylazine reduces brain activity along with dangerous reductions in a person’s breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. The drug can also cause severe skin wounds anywhere on the body that are difficult to heal.
Officials still urge the public to always call 911 if they suspect an overdose.
