How to relieve seasonal allergies

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – With spring fully in bloom, many people are experiencing allergies right now, but it is not stopping them from coming to the park.

“I have allergies now, I have a runny nose, I cough all the time, but I love the park and I come all the time,” said Jamal Morales.

Some are suffering worse than others.

“I am out here trying walking trying to clear up things, but they’re very bad this year,” said Lindsey.

Dr. Jonathan Bayuk with Allergy and Immunology Associates of New England addressed the new wave of allergens to be aware of.

“People are going to start seeing…cottonwood will start releasing some of its seeds. They are like little white things, you have seen them before. It’s all over the place and picks up grass pollen and, if it gets in your eye, it’s like a little grass bomb,” Bayuk explained.

Bayuk explained one way to relieve allergy symptoms besides your typical over-the-counter medicine.

“You can take medications and if the medications aren’t working or you are still having trouble, allergy shots are a great option,” Bayuk said.

The allergy test is exactly what Ralph Welliver did and now he no longer experiences allergy symptoms.

“I responded to 32 out of the 36, so they put up a potion and gave it to me. I had shots for a period of time, it cleared up, then a few years later, it came back not as bad, but I went back for another regiment. That was late 20s and I am 75 now and I am fine,” Welliver said.

Welliver recommended those experiencing severe allergies to try the allergy shots.

“Yes, I would, I would recommend anybody,” Welliver added.

Bayuk also recommended that you wash your hands after being outside and not touch your face to help prevent all the suffering.
