Gov. Reynolds issues disaster proclamation for bird flu in Cherokee County

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Iowa (KTIV) – Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for avian influenza in Cherokee County, Iowa.

The new proclamation was authorized on Sunday, June 2 and it will go into effect immediately until July 2.

The Governor’s Office says, “The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed a positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock.”

The office says the proclamation would allow state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to assist with the following:

• Tracking and Monitoring
• Rapid Detection
• Confinement
• Disposal
• Disinfection

Additionally, this proclamation would waive regulatory provisions connected to commercial vehicles that respond to the affected sites.

The governor’s office says this recent case of bird flu does not pose a public health concern and it currently remains safe to eat poultry products, according to Gov. Reynolds’ Office.

As previously reported, recent cases of bird flu have been seen in Sioux County.
