Experts discuss new methods for children to cope with ADHD amid recent drug shortage

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The number of children being diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is on the rise.

According to the C.D.C. in 2022, 7 Million children between the ages of 3 and 17 had previously been diagnosed with ADHD. That is an increase of 1 million from 2016. This equates to nearly 1 in 9 children being diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their lives.

“When we’re on screens, our brain is literally dumping dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is so important for focus.” Dr. Steven Storage said. Dr. Storage believes technology usage could be playing a role in the growing statistic.

Most children tend to grow out of behaviors like having trouble focusing on one subject while children with ADHD do not.

Those children rely on medications like Adderall, but in the past 2 years, there has been a shortage of this medication. While recent reports show the shortage is starting to get better, leaders in our community are informing others about other methods to cope.

Dr. Karen Harum works with children who have ADHD and she gave her expert advice while on the Navigating ADHD panel discussion.

“Those brains are growing, they’re growing rapidly and we got to feed those brains,” says Dr. Harum “The brain foods that are mostly important are actually healthy fats. We don’t eat much fish and we certainly don’t eat many sardines but those are good oily fish that can provide omega-three fatty aids.”

She suggests feeding kids breakfast that’s high in protein with good fats so they can focus more during the day.

Another upcoming option to help children with ADHD is a technology called Mendi. It’s a neuro-feedback headband. The device creates a challenge for the user helping to strengthen their focusing skills.
