Tuberculosis identified in Union County student: What to know

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (WBTV) – A Union County high school student was diagnosed with tuberculosis, public health officials announced on Thursday.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that spreads through the air and most often affects the lungs. Without proper antibiotic treatment, the disease can cause serious illness and be contagious to others.

Officials said the active case involved a Porter Ridge High School student, who was said to be “following appropriate protocol for active pulmonary tuberculosis.”

Public Health advised the parents of all those who may have been exposed to have their children tested, as they think at least 270 people may have been in contact with the student. Testing is being provided at no cost at Union County Human Services. Positive tests will get support and medication, also for free.

“While the community should be aware of this investigation, there is no immediate risk of health problems related to this case, and there is no further risk of exposure at this time,” said Dennis Joyner, Public Health Director. “We urge parents to have their children tested if they have been identified as close contacts.”

According to the latest state data, 163 tuberculosis cases were identified in North Carolina in 2022. In Union County, about four cases are confirmed each year.
