Study finds that cancer deaths in men predicted to rise globally by 2050 | Kentucky News

PADUCAH — According to a recent study released by the American Cancer Society, cancer deaths in men are projected to rise 93%, from 5.4 million to 10.5 million by 2025.

The number of new cancer cases in men aged 65 and older is projected to increase significantly, from 10.3 million to 19 million — an 84% increase. Factors such as poor environmental areas, population growth, obesity, and substance use can all be attributed to the spike.

According to the American Lung Association, in Kentucky, there are 84.8 new lung cancer cases per 100,000, while the national rate is 54.6 per 100,000.



Among all cancer types, lung cancer is expected to show the most significant increase, with 2,139,081 deaths projected for that age group by 2050. Baptist Health Radiation Oncologist Dr. Peter Locken explained that the substantial increase in cancer cases among men is not surprising.

He attributed the trend primarily to countries with a low Human Development Index (HDI) making progress in eradicating infectious diseases, leading to longer life expectancies. As a result, more people are living to an age where they are at higher risk for developing cancer.

Dr. Peter Locken said on Wednesday, Aug. 14, that the leading cause of cancer cases in Kentucky is because of heavy tobacco use. Locken said by eating health and exercising along with screening can help you prevent and detect lung cancer.



“It’s actually kind of good news, in a way,” Locken said. “Those people aren’t going to die at 5 or 10 years of age from an infectious disease or something that’s preventable, and they’ll live to 60, 70, 80, and long enough to develop the illnesses of an older generation.”

The study reveals that men engage in behaviors that increase their risk of developing cancer, with tobacco and alcohol use being the most significant high-risk factors.

Locken noted that in the United States, Kentucky has the highest number of cancer cases and mortality rates, and he attributed tobacco use as the leading factor to that increase. In Kentucky, there are 84.8 new lung cancer cases per 100,000, while the national rate is 54.6 per 100,000.

This machine, Varian TrueBeam is capable of screening patients for different types of cancers. It also does stereotactic radiosurgery. The machine uses high energy x-rays and electrons to treat cancer by delivering external beam radiation. 



According to the National Institutes of Health, smoking is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths and 80% of lung cancer deaths.

“We are discouraging tobacco use,” Locken said.

He also encouraged individuals aged 50 and older with a 20-pack year smoking history, current smokers, or former smokers who quit within the last 10 years to get screened for lung cancer. The screening is a low-dose CT scan that checks for nodules, which are small tissue build-ups on the lungs that appear as white spots on a CT scan.

Nodules can range in size from 2 millimeters to at least 20 millimeters.

“It’s not only the presence of nodules,” Locken said. “But are they changing or growing over time, and if so, do they require intervention?”

When a patient gets screened for lung cancer, doctors are looking for lung nodules which can show up as white spots on a CT scan. 



Locken noted to decrease the chances of developing lung cancer, develop new habits that can be beneficial.

“Eating healthy, exercise more,” Locken said. “I’m not a good example of that. So do as I say, not as I do, but eating right and exercising more.”
