WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Here’s a look at some of the day’s top health stories.

Vaping teens

Teens with depressive symptoms are twice as likely to vape than other students.

A study out of Australia surveyed more than 5,000 students. About 8% reported having used e-cigarettes before.

Those with poor mental health, moderate or high stress, and low wellbeing were the students most likely to have vaped at some point.

False-positive mammograms

False-positive mammograms are discouraging women from getting future breast cancer screenings.

A study led by U.C. Davis Health looked at more than 1 million patients.

Seventy-seven percent of women with a negative result returned for future screenings, but only 61% returned after it was confirmed the mammogram was a false positive.

Blood stem cells

Scientists have overcome a major hurdle for producing blood stem cells.

A study published in the journal Nature Biotechnology hopes the breakthrough leads to personalized treatments for children with leukemia and bone marrow failure disorders.

Testing in immune deficient mice, researchers took human blood cells and reprogramed them into stem cells that match what’s needed for translation.
