HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Halloween kicks off the start of holiday gathering season.
All of the parties bring food and treats, which can make it hard to keep those health goals in mind.
“Still enjoy the holidays, eat our favorite foods, but put balance to that,” said Valley Health dietitian Jenna Rose.
Rose says there are ways to indulge while being health conscious at your next gathering.
“Try to watch our portion sizes, getting our different food groups in, so making your meals well-balanced,” Rose said.
Make sure your plate has some veggies and protein, and making healthier swaps where you can
“Switch from certain cooking oils to other oils like olive oil, which is a healthier oil to cook in,” Rose said.
Watching your beverages can help you leave room for more of the treats and snacks.
“A punch, an alcoholic beverage or an eggnog may provide us with a lot of additional calories,” said Rose. “You can do water instead with lemon or mint.”
Do remember to enjoy your holidays and to enjoy your favorite foods in moderation.
Before you head to that party, stick to your routine of regular meals so you don’t over eat later.
