HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Christmas can be a stressful time of year for some, and health experts say stress paired with overeating and drinking can lead to a spike in heart attacks.
Dr. Margaret Kadree, clinical specialist for the Virginia Department of Health’s Heart Disease Team, said another contributing factor this time of year is traveling. Sitting in cars or on planes for a long period of time can cause blood clots.
“If you are traveling by air or by car, move your legs at least every hour or so,” Kadree said. “Stop frequently and take a little walk so you can get your circulation going.”
Kadree said that during this time of year, it can be easy for people to forget to take their medication.
If you are experiencing signs of a heart attack, go to the emergency department as fast as possible.
“A classic sign is pain in the chest or feeling pressure on the chest, but in many instances that might not be as common as one may think,” Kadree said.
Those with diabetes may not feel chest pain but may feel nauseous and experience pain on the left arm, jaw and back.
