Wastewater tested for COVID, flu and RSV
The Milwaukee Health Department tracks COVID-19, flu and RSV levels through public wastewater testing. Officials provided a behind-the-scenes look.

It’s cold and flu season. And in Pennsylvania, it’s now RSV season.
The respiratory illness — one that targets your airways — is the leading cause of severe respiratory infections in infants and young children, and it’s surging across the state, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Respiratory syncytial virus isn’t new, but the spread and severity across the country this season is a concern.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks RSV through wastewater data, and Pennsylvania has some of the highest levels in the country.
What is RSV?
RSV is a contagious virus that causes symptoms ranging from mild, cold-like discomfort to illnesses like bronchiolitis or pneumonia. For most people, it’s manageable, but for some it can be life-threatening.
RSV starts like a common cold — runny nose, sneezing, and coughing — but it can worsen quickly.
Signs of a severe case of RSV include difficulty breathing, high fever, dehydration and a bluish tint in lips and fingernails.
There is a vaccine for RSV and the CDC recommends it for people over 60 and those in the third trimester of a pregnancy.
