Quad-demic hits Cincinnati: Four viruses causing misery

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Several illnesses are currently spreading rapidly in Cincinnati, with symptoms lasting from 10 to 14 days. This surge, dubbed the “quad-demic,” involves four main viruses: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, influenza, and the gastrointestinal bug known as norovirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a rise in these respiratory viruses. Locally, Dr. Thomas LaMarre, an infectious disease specialist at The Christ Hospital, confirmed the trend.

“We are starting to see quite a bit more respiratory illness,” said Dr. LaMarre. “We’ve seen a fair amount of rhinovirus, we’re starting to see more RSV, and unfortunately, we are now seeing more influenza over the last couple of weeks.”

Dr. LaMarre noted that one reason for the increase might be a decline in vaccination rates against these illnesses.

“Unfortunately, vaccination numbers seem to be lower than what they were pre-pandemic,” he said.

He also pointed to recent holiday travel and cold weather as factors contributing to the spread, as people are more likely to be indoors and in close contact with others.

Common symptoms currently include sore throats, mild fever, and chills for COVID-19, while influenza often presents with high fever, severe discomfort, myalgia, and muscle aches.

Dr. LaMarre advised that if symptoms arise, getting tested for COVID-19 and the flu is crucial for accessing medications promptly, which is critical for recovery.
