COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSAZ) – The first suspected case of bird flu involving a person has been identified in Ohio, the Ohio Department of Health said Wednesday in a release.
The agency states that the case involves a farm worker in Mercer County who was in contact with deceased commercial poultry.
Located in western Ohio, Mercer County borders Indiana.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the current risk of the public contracting bird flu is low.
“People with close and prolonged, unprotected contact with infected birds are at greater risk,” the agency stated.
If you are in contact with live poultry, you’re advised to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
