CDC classifies flu virus as ‘highly’ severe for first time in 7 years

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — For the first time in more than seven years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified this year’s flu virus as “highly” severe.

A recent CDC report highlights why flu cases are likely continuing to spread.

The virus is primarily transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or talking, and individuals are most contagious during the first three days of infection, often before realizing they have the flu.

Local 12 meteorologist Paul Poteet shared his experience, saying:

“I was on my back for about three days. Either on the couch or flat on my back. Just no energy.”

TriHealth Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Scott Woods noted similar symptoms in patients, stating:

“Lots of cough, lots of bronchitis and some cases also pneumonia.”

Early data indicates that the flu vaccine is only about 35% effective this year.

“The vaccine doesn’t have real strong coverage this year,” Dr. Woods said.

Additionally, less than half of adults have opted to receive the flu shot this season. The flu appears to be lingering longer this year as well.

“Still to this day, a couple weeks later, I have a lot of congestion in my head, and I’m still blowing my nose a lot,” said Poteet.

Individuals can remain contagious for up to seven days after becoming sick, potentially contributing to the virus’s spread. While cold weather itself doesn’t cause illness, it does keep more people indoors, increasing the likelihood of transmission.

To reduce the risk of contracting the flu from contaminated surfaces or individuals, experts advise avoiding touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
