Global health often looks for ‘icons’ and ‘saviors’ in the global north. This is in the face of the usual case that the inspiring practitioners and ‘doers’ are often in the global south, bringing about change and committed to their craft, communities, and patients.
It was an absolute privilege and pleasure to meet Prof Dr Dhananjay Sharma (MBBS, MS, PhD, DSc) in Bhopal earlier this week. To say the least, there are very few like him- a leader in surgery and global health, teacher par excellence, who walks the talk of ethics and yet is so humble and giving! He has refused many leadership positions to be able to focus on academics and patient care, and has been a lifelong activist and campaigner for “appropriate technology for health- care in low-resource settings”
