OKLAHOMA (KXII) – Two cases of measles have been reported in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) reported the cases on Tuesday.

According to a press release, the cases are being reported to the CDC as probable cases because the individuals reported exposure associated with the outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico.

The individuals also reported experiencing symptoms consistent with measles, OSDH said.

The department did not say where in the state the cases were confirmed, but said there is no public health threat at this time.

Now, more than a dozen states have reported cases of the measles, a highly infectious and airborne disease, And those numbers continue to climb, already surpassing 200.

“it is a condition that the newer generation of doctors really has not seen. It was eradicated in the United States officially in 2000, until most recently,” said a pediatrician and physician at AllianceHealth Durant, Paul Varughese.

“While many of us might not have seen measles, we were trained to know some of the symptoms such as running nose and fever,” Varughese said doctors are emphasizing the importance of getting the MMR vaccine to best protect yourself from the disease.

According to the CDC, two doses are 97% effective.

“It can’t be given officially until at least 12 months of age. So the problem is kids under the age of 12 months can still get the disease and can get infected, and we have hospitalizations…one out of every 10 people who get measles gets hospitalized, and so we’re seeing mostly in children’s hospitals now.”

Varughese said if you suspect you may have the measles, it’s important to have communication with your provider before being seen.
