Mobile City Council presents 30th annual National Public Health Week proclamation

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile City Council and Councilman William Carroll presented a proclamation in recognition of National Public Health Week this morning at its regularly scheduled meeting at Mobile Government Plaza. Representing the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) were Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, and Dr. Stephanie Woods-Crawford, Executive Director of Prevention & Wellness at MCHD.

Dr. Michaels shared the following message to those in attendance:

“Thank you for this proclamation. The Mobile County Health Department was initially established in 1816. However, public health has been actively involved in our nation’s history for the past 226 years.

“Public health works at the community level, while doctors and nurses care for individual patients. We are based on the principal idea that everyone should have an equal chance to be as healthy and safe as possible. To a few people, this idea impacts on individual freedoms, but many others see it is our social responsibility.

“In the 20th century, public health interventions helped to increase life expectancy. Instead of dying at 47 years in 1900, people are now living to the age of 77 years or older.

“Our most notable achievements in public health include vaccinations programs, motor vehicle safety, safer workplaces, control of infectious diseases, decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke, safer and healthier foods, healthier mothers and babies, family planning, fluoridation of drinking water and recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard.

“Each one of these achievements have touched everyone. With the continued changes in funding priorities and potential legislative changes, the Mobile County Health Department will continue to promote, protect, and enhance the health and wellbeing of all people in our community.

“Thank you again, for this recognition during National Public Health Week.”
