Flu death toll in North Carolina reaches 515, with 12 new deaths reported last week

NC Department of Health and Human Services says reported flu-related deaths in the state have reached 515 so far this season. Officials report that 12 new-flu related deaths occurred last week.

Recent data shows the age group 65+ has a total of 367 deaths, the 50-64 age range follows with a total of 100, the 25-49 age range has 41 and the 18-24 age range has 2 reported deaths. Pediatric deaths continue to remain at 5.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory virus that can cause mild to severe illness, and at times may lead to death. High risk for flu complications includes older people, young children and those with certain health conditions of compromised immune systems.
