Doctor shares how to reduce chronic inflammation

When it comes to inflammation in the body, doctors say there are two types.

One helps the body, while the other can harm it.

Doctors said there are simple changes that can make a big difference.

Acute inflammation is normal and is a good sign. It’s the immune system’s response when something is wrong.

“So you might have a sore throat. That would be an example. Or you might have a fever,” said Dr. Arch Mainous from the Cleveland Clinic.

For some people, the inflammation continues after the illness or infection has healed.

“About 34% of people age 20 and older actually have, sort of, chronic inflammation,” he said.

This has been linked to the development of things like a stroke, heart attack and cancer.

Harvard Health said there is no routine test for chronic inflammation.

However, routine healthcare does scan for its causes.

Doctors said there are ways to reduce chronic inflammation, without prescriptions.

Eating certain food can help, such as salmon, sardines, spinach, kale and collards.

Along with eating minimally processed foods, doctors said it is important to exercise and maintain a healthy weight.
