Spring is in the air — along with tons of pollen. Load up on the tissues, Iowans, as temperatures rise, so does the pollen count and allergy symptoms.

If you’ve noticed yourself with an itchy or runny nose, congestion or tearing eyes, you may have seasonal allergic rhinitis, usually called hay fever.

In the spring, pollen from trees, grass and ragweed are the primary culprits of allergies, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology.

What is the pollen count in Des Moines?

Des Moines and other central Iowa locations are expected to see “high” tree pollen counts over the next week, according to AccuWeather.

While Iowans will get a break for a couple of days at the end of the week, April 22 and April 23 were expected to be near the “very high” level.

What allergy symptoms do tree, grass and ragweed pollens trigger?

Tree, grass and ragweed pollen triggers many of the stereotypical allergy symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itchy eyes, nose and throat or worsening of asthma symptoms, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology. Some may also experience tearing eyes or dark circles under the eyes.

How to improve spring allergy symptoms

While there is no cure for hay fever, there are steps that can be taken to mitigate the effects of allergies. Here are some tips from IQAir to help prevent allergy symptoms.

  • Keep windows closed: This week, limit ragweed pollen from entering the house, especially between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., when pollen counts are the highest by keeping your doors and windows closed.
  • Take a shower before going to bed: Washing your face and hair will help remove any pollen after spending time outside.
  • Air purifiers and masks are all products that can also help lessen the effects of hay fever.
